Early in our journey in starting Barnwell Bio, a producer mentioned that "it’s so frustrating when disease affects your livelihood."

This sentiment stuck with us, and has become a guide for our work at Barnwell Bio. Running a livestock or poultry farm - from a small family farm up to the largest producers in the nation - means making sure animals are safe and healthy. We quickly learned just how challenging and demanding their jobs are, but their unwavering dedication to doing right by their animals inspired us to build systems that could make their work a little easier.

Story

It wasn't the most obvious journey to working in agriculture for the Barnwell Bio founding team. We first met while building our nation’s COVID-19 wastewater surveillance infrastructure during the pandemic. We watched wastewater data become the leading indicator communities needed, often detecting outbreaks days before individual testing data caught up.

As we saw the impact of supply chain disruptions on food systems during those same years, we started asking: if wastewater surveillance could protect human communities, what could it do for the animals that feed us? Coming into agriculture as newcomers, we knew we had to go straight to the experts: the producers and veterinarians who live and breathe this work every day. What we found was a community that cares deeply about animal welfare and is remarkably open to new technology - if it actually works.

We start by analyzing waste and environmental samples to generate insights around disease specific to their operation. But animal health encompasses far more than just disease—nutrition, fertility, productivity, and sustainability are all interconnected. We are building a solution to address each of these critical areas, all from a single, easy to collect sample.
